May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and UHMP is launching “Therapy Thursdays'' -- a chance for our students to speak live, on Instagram, with a mental health expert/therapist about mental health topics. The first session is on Thursday May 6 at 6:30 p.m. EST. The first session will be a look at why therapy can be beneficial and focus on young people of color. The other May sessions will cover LGBTQ+ topics, suicide prevention and the connection between mental health, fitness and sports.
Here’s how YOU can get involved:
- Students, would you like to be part of the experience? If so, let us know what mental health topics you’re passionate about and a list of possible questions you’d ask a therapist if you had a chance to talk to one. You may be chosen to moderate or question the therapist one week.
- Do you have a question you’d like a mental health expert to answer but not sure you want to participate live? Share it with us via email - firstname.lastname@example.org before May 5 at 8 pm and we can pose it for you.
- Tune in to UHMP’s IG Live and show your support for our students.
We are focusing a lot on mental health in the coming months and years - continuing with our focus on young people of color but also looking at it through an LGBTQ+ lens. If you are LGBTQ+ or an ally, we’d love to also hear what Pride month (in June) means to you this year or to be connected to any friends or family members you have who might want to weigh in for a special feature we are planning with the Washington Blade.
While you’re at it, let us know if there is a father out there - yours or another - who is a particularly strong LGBTQ+ ally we can speak with/interview for in an article on that topic. And, finally, are there any myths about the LGBTQ+ community we should take the opportunity to bust during Pride month? How about that one about how being trans is just a phase? You can respond to these questions in our LGBTQ+ Youth Pride Survey.
We also share updates and opportunities on our social media platforms, so don't forget to follow us!
